All the city's hubub weaved together into a hot and humid kaleidoscope of Shanghainess. The metropolis has a peculiar perception of itself as being different to other Chinese cities. Somehow standing apart. From the financial pomp of Pudong to the European cafe culture and architecture of the French Concession, it certainly has a different feel to other Chinese cities. The artwork's lilting, slightly decadent style reflects this.
But it also has a mirage-like quality: the notion of Shanghai as an 'island' was delivered a rather abrupt reality check in the form of a changing political climate and harsh Covid lock-downs. Yet in many ways this has always been Shanghai's story. The push and pull between the free wheeling Shanghai way and the tempering hand of the rigid political centre, however far away it sometimes feels, gives the city much of its alure. And sometimes gets it into trouble! There's certainly a cheekily mischievous quality to the artwork too.
